Guizhou restaurant Maolago expands with a second location on Julu Lu, located right above Pass Residence.

The menu here is similar to the original Fuxing Lu Maolago’s second floor offerings, which is centered on hotpot. It’s an Oha Group restaurant, therefore, the interior design carries the same industrial chic DNA or as I’d put it, “intentional construction site hip.”

If I could compare the two, I’d say the Julu Lu location is more for a proper sit-down hotpot dinner, and less of a bar-lounge hangout like what Maolago Fuxing Lu has on its first floor. Dinner at Maolago 2.0 was thoroughly enjoyable, but I personally prefer the vibe of the first location.

For hotpot, you have fish or chicken as options.

The sturgeon fish in red sour soup (¥190/200g for the fish) was delicious. It’s a broth base of naturally fermented vine tomatoes, sour and very appetizing. It’s a soup that you want to sip on early in the meal.

You’re also meant to order a “蘸” dipping sauce (¥8/serving) to better enjoy your hotpot. It’s a small dish of fermented soybeans, chilies, mountain lemon pepper oil, chives, coriander and garlic.

It’s mostly wine for drinks.
