Is it a cookie? Is it a waffle? No, it’s a stroopwaffle! Levi’s Stroopwaffles brings the popular Dutch biscuit-cookie to the Shanghai masses with a brick-and-mortar.
Stroopwaffles (or stroopwafels) are a beloved Dutch dessert made from large waffle cookies with a caramel filling. It literally translates to syrup waffle.
Levi’s Stroopwaffles has been delivering these tasty treats for the last four years only through private orders and Jiashan Market events. It was founded in 2019 by Dutch-Chinese Chelsea and is named after her son. After much searching, Levi’s Stroopwaffles now has its own storefront, located on a sleepy (almost deserted) street in Jing’an.
The cookie dough is freshly pressed into thin discs, then skillfully sliced in half, and given a thick spread of melty stroop before being sandwiched into form. It’s a buttery cookie with a cinnamon-forward caramel filling. A whole “super waffle” is ¥35, which is plenty (at least for me) as a snack. Get four for ¥120.
They also come in travel jars, ¥50 for medium, ¥70 for large. There’s also a cinnamon stroopwaffle gelato cup (¥45); the ice cream texture is a touch grainy for my liking and it’s very cinnamon-y. Levi’s Stroopwaffles also does party boxes, as well as “birthday style” stroopwaffles with custom greeting messages and toppings upon request.
The store is currently in soft opening, hours and days to extend in due time. Delivery available.
