RŌZO 芦苇 is a cozy wine bar and restaurant in Jing’an that opened this past September. They’ve since expanded the menu to include some excellent main dishes that are made for sharing to go along with their affordably priced wines.

The Food

RŌZO 芦苇 has a short and sweet food menu of globally inspired dishes, courtesy of consulting chef Carlos Sotomayor from Blue Plate Consulting.

Octopus (¥95) – A whole octopus leg served with black olive mayonnaise and nori chips.

There’s a traditionally French foie gras torchon with Vietnamese-style plating, hamachi quick cured in coconut-citrus sauce, and a delicious octopus leg with black olive mayo. Those are the staple starters, and they’ve just added some excellent main dishes to share.

The new dishes are hearty, comforting, and rather rustic, all best enjoyed with a glass or two of wine.

Quinoa “Meatballs” (¥77) – Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a peppery, subtly spicy sauce. Very enjoyable as a starter.

Asparagus (¥88) with truffle-mushroom cream, black garlic, and shavings of Parmesan cheese, topped with a deep-fried soft-boiled egg. A lovely appetizer or side dish to go with the mains.

Royal Arctic Char (¥197) – Top quality Icelandic arctic char (250g) crusted with a five-pepper seasoning, served with roasted onions, potatoes, and fennel, and a light sage cream. It’s a simple dish that allows the quality of the fish to shine. It’s a large portion, easily a meal for two with a side dish.

Migas Lamb (¥296) – Lamb shank (500-600g) slow-cooked in a Mediterranean stew with white beans, served with shaved parmesan and toasted sourdough garlic bread.

The meat is extremely tender and falls off the bone at a touch. The tomato base stew compliments the meat. A comforting dish.If you didn’t already have a glass of wine in hand, this dish will make you want one.

Bonnie (¥892) – This is the showstopper. It’s a 1.2-1.3kg bone-in short rib that’s been slow-cooked for 18 hours, finished with red wine glaze and gremolata. Comes with sides of roasted zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes. It’s all very considered with extra red wine glaze and charcoal salt on the side.

Carved table-side, the meat is beautifully marbled and extremely flavorful. A definite crowdpleaser. Excellent with a glass of red wine.

Speaking of wine, ask for restaurant manager Matthieu for a recommendation or peruse the wines in the cellar.

Wines by the glass start from ¥55, and bottles from ¥260.
