Oliang is a humble restaurant, unpretentious in appearance with a simple dining room and an inviting terrace. It gets a regular lunchtime crowd and evenings are generally chill.

The restaurant is run by a close-knit Thai-Chinese team, who’s brought over a team of Thai chefs from the homeland. Curries and pastes are all made fresh from scratch.

The Food

On the menu are a handful of fan favorites, but the signatures truly stand out, of which most are not normally found at other Thai restaurants like the Fish Custard.

As for classics, most lead with punchier flavors like the iconic Massaman curry, a fantastic version unlike ones found at other cookie-cutter Thai eateries. The tom yum is given an upgrade with crab claws and the grilled pork neck is exemplary, and the grilled chicken is excellent.

Massaman Beef Curry (¥168)

The Massaman Beef Curry presents a bowl of fork-tender beef in a thick, dark brown curry. The curry carries a powerful burst of cardamom, nuttiness from cashew paste, and an undertone of sweetness from coconut cream.

It’s unique and delicious, intense and complex. Rice is necessary to enjoy every last spoonful of this curry.

Curry Prawn (¥168)

Another dish worth highlighting is the Curry Prawn. Jumbo prawns are served in a lightly spiced curry with egg. The egg, stirred in to create a fluffy scramble, which thickens the curry and gives it a silken texture. The lightness of the curry complements the juicy prawns.

Grilled Chicken (¥188/whole, ¥128/half)

I highly recommend the Grilled Chicken. Not only is it tasty, but it’s a great value dish. The chicken is extremely juicy, fragrant, and flavorful, marinated in a dry Thai spice rub with pepper and lemongrass.

Plenty of other dishes are also easy to love, like the classic stir-fried pork with basil, and the grilled pork neck, crusted with toasted rice powder for texture and served with a citrusy fish sauce dip.

For something a little more elevated, try the Black Cod with Pomelo Salad. The pomelo salad really makes this dish shine. The pomelo segments are marinated in fish sauce, spices, fresh herbs, nuts, and fresh citrus. Each bite is intense with umami. The fish is straightforward, the firm, flaky fish grilled tender with a crispy skin.

Hor Mok Thai Curried Fish Custard (¥128) – A custard made with fish, mussels, and prawns, laced with lemongrass, kaffir lime, and spices, topped with coconut cream. It’s light and fluffy with delicate flavors.

The Pandan Noodles with Coconut Panna Cotta is the perfect end to the meal. Fresh made pandan noodles are fragrant and smooth, not the least bit grainy, and the panna cotta light and refreshing. Not too sweet.
