The 1515 West Chophouse & Bar is a classic American-style steakhouse in the Jing An Shangri-La, Shanghai. It’s an elegant destination with sleek interiors of mahogany lined banquettes and floors, leather upholstery, and glossy black wall tiles, all overlooking the open kitchen. On the opposite side of the dining room is the bar, if you fancy a tipple before or after dinner.

The chophouse has just welcomed Peter Lin as the new executive sous chef. He’s quite the notable talent.

Peter Lin

I first met Chef Peter in 2015, just before he won the Bocuse d’Or China Selection for the second time. He’s had quite the career, and carries accolades from Bocuse d’Or and Café Grey Deluxe. One of his signature dishes, new on the menu at The 1515, is the turbot. If you’re looking for an alternative main course at the steakhouse, I highly recommend it.

Steakhouses are a dime a dozen in Shanghai, but what makes 1515 West stand out in addition to chef Peter’s prowess is their dry and wet aging methods (a minimum of 25 days), a direct line to Australian cattle breeders Stanbroke for an exclusive selection of prized beef cuts, and their award winning team of sommeliers led by King Wang, Director of Wine, who was awarded Sommelier of the Year by China’s Wine List of the Year Awards 2021.

If you like aged beef with good wine, this is a destination for it.

The Food

Without further ado, here’s what you should be ordering:

1515 Cobb Salad (¥138) – Now this is impressive. It’s a Cobb salad alright, but served in a whole freshly baked loaf. Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, hard boiled eggs, crispy bacon, and blue cheese neatly arranged in a wholly edible loaf, served with vinaigrette.

I highly recommend asking the staff to mix the salad in a separate bowl so you can fully enjoy both salad and bread.

Grilled Beef Tongue (¥128) – Chef Peter has opted for a local twist, adding spices not commonly seen at American-style steakhouses. Grilled to a tender finish, the beef tongue is coated in a spicy chili crisp of peanuts and aromatics and house black pepper sauce.

Grilled Octopus (¥138) – An octopus leg fired on the grill and coated with bright lemon glaze and almonds.

Seafood Bisque (¥148) – A light bodied yet ultimately rich soup made with lobster stock, fortified with additional seafood and aromatics. The mildly spicy bisque is served over poached abalone, mussels, shrimp, and squid.

As for steaks, they have a “house selection” from Stanbroke Australia, the 1515 Black Angus Wagyu M5, which is produced exclusively for 1515 West. In addition, they also have Rangers Valley, a cut above. All steaks are served with one side dish and one sauce of your choice.

1515 Black Angus Wagyu M5 T-Bone (¥998) – The T-Bone cut has best of both worlds in a steak, the tender filet and the beefy striploin on one bone. A 600g T-Bone dry aged for 45 days, cooked to medium rare.

Silky and buttery Mashed Potatoes. Side dishes are ¥58 a la carte.

Turbot (¥298) – Whole turbot roasted in the oven and served with sauce meunière, fried capers, fresh lemon, and croutons. Beauty in simplicity.

Violet Crumble (¥98) – A fluffy milk chocolate mousse with thick caramel sauce and chocolate ice cream, topped with brittle honeycomb.

Apple Pie (¥128) – Spiced apple cooked to a tender finish and baked into a buttery, flaky pastry served with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon anglaise. This hits the spot. I like it much more than the Violet Crumble.
