It is not to be confused with its upmarket sister restaurant Bella Vita Bistro over on Tianping Lu. Bella Vita Jing’an is much more easy-going, and is akin to a neighborhood eatery rather than a destination restaurant. Every neighborhood needs reliable, everyday restaurants, and this is one of them.

The Food: Pizzas, Pastas & Grilled Platters

I’ll admit Bella Vita caught me by surprise. The pizzas were excellent, the seafood pasta delicious, and portions generous, and it is all very reasonably priced. Expect to pay around ¥200 for dinner, or a little more if you’re hitting the premium cuts of beef.

They do two kinds of pizzas, one with a 48-hour fermented dough and the other Roman-style pizzas. Both were great, one airy and chewy, the other light and crunchy.

All pizzas are made-to-order, available as 8 or 12-inch servings. The entry-level margherita is ¥99 for a 12-inch. Bella Vita has even won some big awards for their pizza, namely the World Pizza Championship (Campionato Mondiale Della Pizza, est. 1992), China Selections, Champions from 2016 to 2018. The quality of the pizzas certainly does speak for themselves.

2018 Champion Pizza (¥119/¥238) – The reigning pizza that won them the title in 2018. It comes with a whole burrata that’s sliced open tableside. The creamy cheese is portioned onto each slice with toppings of bresaola, truffle oil, arugula, mozzarella, grana padano, egg yolk, and dried mushrooms. One of the signature pizzas.

Calabria (¥99) – A Roman-style pizza with Calabrian n’duja sausage, oven-roasted zucchini, burrata, and mozzarella. A pizza I would happily polish off on my own.

Bresaola (¥128) – Thinly sliced bresaola with artichokes, grana padano cheese, arugula, and light drizzle of lemon dressing. This air-dried beef has a sweet, almost fruity aroma with lingering funky flavors. Worth trying if you haven’t already.

Fusilli Tartufati (¥90) – Fusilli sautéed with pork sausage in truffle cream sauce and finished with grana padano. It’s rich, thick, and creamy.

Spaghetti Allo Scoglio (¥99) – A fantastic seafood spaghetti loaded with prawns, clams, and mussels, tossed in a thick cherry tomato and basil sauce. Comforting.

Tagliatelle ai Fungi (¥80) – Egg pasta with seasonal mushrooms and grana padano. It’s the lighter of the three.

BV Grill Platter (¥499) – A whopping 1.5kg of meat cooked on the grill, an impressive and generous portion to share. Comes with Argentinian ribeye, herbed chicken breast, Iberian pork ribs, Italian pork sausage, and half a diavola chicken. Served with potato wedges, black pepper sauce, and a green “Italiana” arugula sauce.

The rosemary herbed chicken breast was juicy and flavorful, unlike the common perception of chicken breast, and the roasted chicken diavola had a smoky, persistent heat from the dry rub spice rub.

Grilled Wagyu M6/M7 flank steak (350g/¥599) – This was quite special. The steak comes served in a Dutch oven, in which the sliced meat is grilled over coals and smoked with fresh herbs.

Showmanship aside, the quality of the beef is apparent. Compared to the ribeye in the grill platter, this supersedes by a landslide. Strong beefy flavors and imbued with smoky aromas. One of four special beef cuts available.

For dessert, there’s a tiramisu (¥48) or gelato. The gelatos are made by Buonissimo, an artisanal gelateria brand under the Bella Vita group. Flavors are available by the scoop for ¥35.

Bella Vita Gelato Platter (¥88) – Hazelnut, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors with cereal crumble and cookie. I favored the hazelnut for its intensity and the chocolate.

Drinks, like the food, are also reasonably priced. A classic Spritz is ¥48, while non-alcoholic teas and lemonades start at ¥35. As for wine, it starts at ¥56 by the glass, ¥245 a bottle.
