Holy Spice is a Balinese-inspired restaurant in Shanghai’s former French Concession, from the OHA Group (SFSF, Bar No. 3, Restaurant Fu). The food loosely draws from Indonesian and Balinese tradition, borrowing names like rendang and babi guling with sambal but taking its own modernized path. Think broadly Indonesian-inspired, with some creative fusion detours like eel with foie gras.
The space is charming and eclectic, like a Balinese retreat cafe. The main dining floor is a galley room with seats stretching along the windows, colorful and chic, with soft, considered decor that works as well for a date as it does for a group. Up a floor is a rooftop garden terrace, furnished with upcycled pieces from OHA’s other venues, lush with herbs and plants. Another level up is their herb garden — a spacious, ambitious setup with planters full of fresh herbs picked daily for the kitchen below.
