Alma Luna is a Cuban-inspired cocktail bar in Shanghai from luminary bartender Yao Lu (Union Trading Company). It is, notably, not a rum bar, despite the easy association. Behind a bright yellow doorway on Xiangyang Bei Lu, the space unfolds into an ode to mid-century Havana: emerald banquettes, warm wood, tropical artwork, and walls lined with old Cuban snapshots. It seats around 30 with a six-seat bar at its heart. It’s elegant cocktail bar meets neighborhood hangout built for conversation.
The drinks draw on Cuban classics and house originals, most memorably the Miami Vice, a two-in-one piña colada and strawberry daiquiri. Food, from chef Ling Huang (Pirata, Latin Woo), leans into comfort: chicharrón, croquettes, and a proper Cubano sandwich. It’s Yao’s romantic, imagined Havana — he’s never been — but an easy one to love with warm hospitality, delish drinks, and comforting bites.
