Bastard is a contemporary Chinese restaurant in Jing’an serving small plates and natural wine, led by chef Michael Janczewski. It’s situated all the way at the end of the residential lane, in a building that was once a popular youth hostel. It’s small, ultra-stylish, with seating for about 25 people. Interiors are bold, crossing bare concrete walls with bright magenta tables. The menu is a mash-up of dishes inspired by Chinese cuisines and flavors, mixed up with Western influences. Like the name suggests, they seek to “bastardize” Chinese food with an inventive, tasty twist. Natural wine focused. Food is tasty, but hella pricey.
