Located on Wuding Road in Jing’an, GEN (根) is a modern Guizhou restaurant serving creative East-meets-West dishes alongside a thoughtful natural sake program. The cozy, living room–like space is moody and dimly lit, featuring eclectic furniture and eye-catching minority artwork from Guizhou. Come weekends, it’s a buzzy atmosphere of regulars. The menu, crafted by self-taught chef July, changes seasonally and highlights fermented flavors, local spices, and inventive yet casual plates like lacto-fermented beef tartare and fava bean cakes topped with perilla seeds. When the dining room fills up, an impromptu sidewalk table over a bicycle adds to the charm. For drinks, GEN puts the spotlight on organic, naturally fermented sakes by the glass.
