Upcoming Restaurants & Bars

Beverage brand Shanghai Love is opening a restaurant/lounge mid-late November in the old White Castle space in Fengsheng Li. Taps for beer, cider, and draft cocktails, Chinese wines, and signature cocktails by Shanghai Love’s Sean Shao. There will also be a full menu of contemporary Asian food, courtesy of consulting chef Michael Janczewski, formerly the chef at Canton Disco and Hong Kong’s Ho Lee Fook.

Chef Michael will also be working with Sebastien Dallee (previously of Italo/FUNKA Group and Heritage by Madison) to open a neighborhood eatery on Dongping Lu by the end of the year. Neo-bistro fare with bold Asian flavors and a well-curated wine list. Chef Michael has been busying himself with a couple of pop-ups around town, including recent showings at SOiF and Mikkeller.

Taste Buds and Cages are teaming up to open an old school arcade dedicated to console games in the Taste Buds space on Xiangyang Bei Lu. Food and drink will be courtesy of Taste Buds, game design by Cages. Opening end November.

The team behind Shake is opening a whiskey bar mid-November on Fumin Lu x Yan’an Lu. It’ll also have a food and whisky pairing menu by chef Danyi Gao. Speaking of, chef Danyi is opening a new iteration of her Vietnamese restaurant, Bun Cha Cha BBQ on Hengshan Lu with emphasis on late-night Vietnamese barbecue. This one is due for mid-December.

The Colca Group is expanding their reach with two new restaurants. They’re opening a second location of Azul Italiano in the 1000 Tree project along Suzhou Creek at the end of the year. That’ll be followed by Azul Grill on Wukang Lu, to open by Chinese New Year.

Tianzifang gets a little facelift. New in the tourist complex is SUR, a modern eatery serving Mediterranean fare alongside an all-day brunch menu featuring savory waffles. Soft opening starts next week.


Charlie’s has opened a three-story concept on Wuding Lu, located in the same compound as La Social. It has a rooftop beer garden, and serves Cantonese barbecue in addition to the Charlie’s menu. Pizzas to be added a later date.

Indian restaurant KLAY has launched Tiffin, a delivery-only brand currently servicing Xuhui via Eleme and Meituan. The delivery menu has a couple dishes from the restaurant, but are mostly new casual entrees and sets designed for delivery.

The people behind Le Baron have opened a lounge-club, GRNDCNTRL (read: grand central) in Xintiandi.

New neighborhood bar Revolving Door has replaced Funky Monkey, and theatre-dining concept The Red Box has replaced The Apartment.
