There’s a reason I call Sun-San a serial omakase restauranteur. In just a couple of years, he’s built an empire of sushi houses that include Ochiyo, Noya, Sushi Brothers, Love Sushi, and Uni Shushi at the PAC complex in Jing’an. Now, he adds a second Uni Shushi location in Xintiandi.

Uni Shushi 2.0: Affordable Omakase in Xintiandi

Uni Shushi is the more more accessible brand, with omakase sets at ¥498 and ¥698, making it one of the more competitive options on the Shanghai market.

The new location sits in Hubindao Mall in Xintiandi, right across from the park where Shanghai Fashion Week is held. It’s a ten-seat counter – four more than the original – plus a private room for four.

The ¥698 set gets you around ten pieces of sushi, generously stuffed handrolls, sashimi starters, a couple of hot dishes, miso soup, and a simple dessert of fruit or ice cream. Sea urchin makes an appearance, and tuna belly often does too. The ¥498 set is a leaner version of the same experience.

And the quality shines where it counts. A fatty cut of tuna belly is lightly brushed with house seasoning, allowing the richness to shine, while sweet shrimp, one of my favorite pieces of sushi, is creamy and unctuous. Handrolls come filled to bursting with crab, tuna, and sea urchin, the latter served towards the end of the meal, a final luxurious cap to the meal.

Hot dishes tend to be more flexible and change with availability. On this visit, a grilled pigeon leg served with a dipping spice mix was followed by a prawn tempura. Simple, well-executed.

It’s all in line with Sun-San’s minimalist and comfort-first philosophy, carried through to this branch by one of his apprentices.

The mall setting might sound like a turn off, but once you’re inside the zen-like embrace of the counter, it fades quickly.

FYI: This branch of Uni Shushi is running a lunch special. For ¥298, you get 10 pieces of selected sushi, miso soup, tamagoyaki, and dessert. This runs until December 31, 2026.
