The brunch buffet at YICAFE has got to be the biggest in Shanghai. For those living in Puxi, this buffet would be a worthwhile reason to cross the river.

YICAFE is the all-day dining restaurant located on level two of the Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai. On the weekend, an army of chefs and cooks race to fill up the buffet stations before the 12pm brunch opening time.

They have more than 10 live cooking stations and feature more than a dozen cuisines. It’s a wildly impressive array of food, an international feast all in one locale.

There are a dozen kinds of fresh seafood on ice plus sashimi and sushi, a Western section featuring grilled meats from tomahawks to racks of lamb, lobsters, beef bourgignon, and sliders, Chinese-style barbecued skewers and flame-baked oysters, Cantonese roasts including whole suckling pigs, and dim sum.

There are stations for noodles, eggs Benedict, for Malaysian food (because Shangri-La represents), for Japanese, Indian, Thai, and Middle Eastern, the latter featuring a delicious lamb tajine, mezze, and freshly shaved meats for kebabs.

At 12:30pm, a massive tuna is displayed in the center of the hall, and then promptly returned to the kitchen to be carved up for sashimi.

And there are not one but two chocolate fountains, and even a donut wall.

It is an insane amount of food.

I asked the head chef if he’s known of anyone making the full tour of the buffet before. He said no, but that they get regulars, who usually make a beeline for their favorites, namely seafood, grill, and barbecue.

For entertainment, there’s live guitar performances and a clown with balloon puppets for the kids.

For those wanting a more secluded experience, there are three medium-sized private rooms for 5-8 people, and a large room for 10-12 on the upper floor.

How Much

The brunch buffet is ¥418, which includes unlimited soft drinks and juice. Add on ¥148 for three hours of free-flow selected beer and wine. Children ages 6-11 half price, kids 5 and under free.

Prices above subject to 10% service charge and prevailing government taxes.

YICAFE will also be serving the buffet brunch on May 1.
