Disney’s first ever Zootopia opens at Disneyland Shanghai, Pudong on December 20, 2023!
Here’s an exclusive look inside the new Land, featuring the Hot Pursuit ride, custom food items, as well as tips and tricks to note when you visit.
This is the first-ever Zootopia-themed land at any Disney Park worldwide. It is the second major expansion of the Shanghai resort, a project seven years in the making.
Zootopia, an animated film featuring anthropomorphic mammals with bunny protagonist Judy Hopps and deuteragonist fox Nick Wilde, is currently China’s highest-grossing imported animated feature film of all time. This is the
Zootopia Disneyland Shanghai
The hyper-detailed park takes you through the film’s mammal-friendly metropolis, featuring neighborhoods of Tundratown, Savanna Central, Sahara Square, and more. It’s an epic journey with so much awesome detail.
First hot tip: Re-watch the film before you go.
The mammalian metropolis is a fantastically immersive experience, a testament to the combined genius and creativity of hundreds of people who worked on the project with close collaboration with filmmakers at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
It’s a park that brings Zootopia to life through state-of-the-art technology, larger than life Audio-Animatronics figures, detailed artwork and design, engineering, and tiresome work from Imagineers, transporting visitors directly into the beloved movie.
Step onto Mane Street and walk through shops featuring some of the film’s most iconic characters. Crane your neck to look up at Savanna Central’s Zootopitron, a jumbotron billboard displaying absolutely cute advertisements for Zootopia-related products like Gideon Grey’s blueberry pies and a Zootopia concert.
The story of the park begins where the movie left off, so you’ll notice a storyline with continuity. For example, you’ll see Nick’s desk at the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD), as he’s now an officer, and you’ll find Bellwether, the villain mastermind sheep, carrying out her sentence in prison. More on that below.
Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, The Ride
A highlight of Disneyland Shanghai’s Zootopia Land is the Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride.
The ride begins with an unconventional queue line — it’s more of a walk-through that takes visitors to ZPD orientation with Officer Clawhauser, the department offices, Zootopia Prison, to Chief Bogo’s conference room, and then finally to the actual ride.
The ride is an epic car chase with Judy and Nick as they try to save Gazelle, Zootopia’s pop star, who’s been kidnapped by Dawn Bellwether. A trackless ride that zips, turns, and spins you through more Zootopia neighborhoods featuring appearances from more characters, ending in a thrilling turbo-charged car chase.
Animatronics, holograms, smoke and mirrors — all work fantastically to bring an exhilarating experience.
The Residents’ Buildings
Watch as Zootopia residents come to life including at the residents’ building out on the main square.
Gather around as Fru Fru and her father Mr. Big (Tundratown’s feared crime boss), along with Koslov the polar bear, Flash the sloth, Yax the yak, Duke Weaselton the smart-mouthed weasel, and the Hopps family appear to interact amongst themselves (and with the crowd) throughout the day.
Watch out — one of the storylines involves a splash zone!
Zootopia Land Hidden Secrets
Hidden secrets aplenty! Features that are built into the park for visitors to discover or learn from park staff. (Give it a while, I’m sure the deep Web will have a list soon enough.)
I’ll give you two hidden secrets.
1. Howl outside Judy Hopps’ home. If you do a good howl, you might get a howl-back!
2. Hover next to Koslov outside Fashions by Fru Fru. Stand a little longer, and he might look at you and talk back!
There are tons of these hidden sequences throughout the park.
Photo Ops
Be prepared to say, “omg that’s sooooo cute,” about a dozen times whilst there. Also, no shame in taking advantage of the photo-ops.
Special Food Creations
As for food items, Zootopia Land has their own creations inspired by the film.
There are Jumbo-pops are made with hawthorn, as are Pawpsicles, which are sold at ice cream carts.
Other food items include a “carrot sandwich,” a sandwich with broccolini and carrots, Judy’s Waffle with Ginger Flavored Ice Cream, Ginger Flavored Ice Cream Sundae in a Disney Zootopia Elephant Ice Cream Bowl (that you can take home as a souvenir), The Big Donut (available jumbo and regular sized), Clawhauser-shaped marshmallow pops, carrot-shaped candies, and blueberry pies inspired by Gideon Grey’s pies in the film.
The pies are actually really moist, filling, and delicious!
