Atelier Kau Lou is a contemporary Cantonese restaurant in Shanghai

Atelier Kau Lou

Atelier Kau Lou (玖樓) is a contemporary Cantonese restaurant high above Fumin Lu — the first Chinese concept from Atelier, a restaurant group that has been operating in Shanghai for over a decade. The room is enormous, taking up the entire floor, decked out in soft matte green, with multiple spacious private rooms, a large communal dining room, and two terraces running its length. It shares the floor with cocktail bar Opia, another Atelier concept.

The kitchen fuses traditional Cantonese technique with a light Western touch, nothing overbearing, leaning toward modern presentation. For example, a whole char-grilled crab arrives over paccheri pasta. The wider menu covers Cantonese roasted meats, soups, claypot dishes, live seafood, classic stir-fries, and dim sum. Off-menu dishes are available on request. Entry is from the Changle Lu side, via the office elevators.
