Xiao Ping Shanghainese Restaurant

Xiao Ping (晓平饭店) is a popular home-style Shanghainese eatery located in Xuhui, Shanghai. Founded in 2004 by Chef-Owner Tang Yichen, the restaurant’s story is one of seizing a simple opportunity rather than a grand ambition. Over the years, its consistent quality and authentic flavors have earned it features in media spotlights, transforming it from a local secret into a well-known destination. It still draws a loyal local following. Its enduring appeal, however, lies not just in fame but in its commitment to affordable, tasty Benbang (Shanghainese) classics.

Signature dishes include their Scallion Oil Clams (¥68, 葱油鲜黄贝), Egg and Tomato Scramble with Beef (¥48, 放弃牛肉滑蛋), Stir-Fried Pepper Eel (¥108, 响油鳝丝), and Red-Braised Pork Belly aka Hongshao Rou (¥98, 上海红烧肉). For non-Mandarin speakers, the menu is Chinese-only but is helpfully illustrated with pictures for each dish, making ordering straightforward. Expect brisk service, and a queue on good weather days.
