Bird Hut is a casual Chinese restaurant specializing in Cantonese roasts over rice.

The first location opened three years ago on Taixing Lu, and they also have locations on Shaanxi Bei Lu and Xiangyang Nan Lu.

I know, I’m late to the roast party. I’d been meaning to check it out, and I’m glad I finally did — it’s a lunchtime lifesaver and a great option for those lazy nights when delivery/waimai is the dinner plan.

About The Roasts

The menu is all about the “cut” of meat, much like you’d find at Hong Kong or Southeast Asian hawker stalls. It might seem a bit overwhelming at first glance, with options for goose, duck, and two types of chicken divided into half portions, upper and lower quarters, and combos with rice. Dark meat costs a bit more than white, as it should, because in Asia, we know what’s good. *lulz*

There’s also char siu, roast pork, and suckling pig to round things out, which are all pretty good.

Of all the roasts, the goose takes the top spot for me. It’s juicy, flavorful and boasts a crispy skin, served with a sweet honey-like sauce.

Close behind is the char siu — juicy, textured, and with charred, caramelized edges. It’s not going to change your life, but it’s a solid version.

The pork belly is also good, crispy skinned and just the right about of fat, though I’ve had better elsewhere. If we’re comparing, the crispy skin on the suckling pig is much more desirable. However, that cut it is way fattier. The rice itself is flavorful and not too oily.

Bird Hut is a tad pricier than some of its competitors, but I find that the quality is spot on. It’s a fast-casual spot, so service is brisk, as is the turnover — most customers are usually in and out under 30 minutes.

Roasts over rice start from ¥45, and options for combos of two (¥55) or three roasts (¥65) are also available.

In short, Bird Hut guarantees a satisfying fuss-free meal.

Also, the Xiangyang Nan Lu location is currently collaborating with Ferra Bar, a long-term pop-up by the Brewlosophy co-founders. They’re on for the night shift, serving up simple, wallet-friendly drinks from 9pm.
