Shanghai Brunch: Heritage by Madison

Heritage by Madison is one of my favorite new openings this year. And they’ve just launched brunch!

The brunch is self-described by chef/owner Austin Hu as “80’s era dim sum carts meets New York brunch without boundaries”. He’s doing his East-meets-West thing again, in a fashion that only he can pull off.

Brunch at Heritage by Madison

Brunch at Heritage is where eggs Benedicts come served in dim sum steamer baskets, noodles are a staple, and sandwiches reign supreme. Cold dishes are carted around the restaurant in food trolleys alongside a drinks cart of bocktails and champagne.

Drinks are wheeled around on the trolley—bottled juices (¥60), cocktails, and cold brew coffee (¥32).

Hot Chicken Waffle Sandwich (¥58) – Some like saving the best for last, but I suggest eating this early in your meal to fully appreciate the awesomeness that is this sandwich. Crunchy fried chicken with chili oil, avocado mousse, and pickled onion sandwiched between sesame-speckled waffles.

Uni Egg Custard (¥148) – Splendidly superfluous. For those who just wake up and go: “I’ll have sea urchin for breakfast, thanks.” Fluffy and creamy egg custard, umami-rich uni, puffed rice, cauliflower, and smoked salmon roe.

In Summary

Favorites: Chicken & Waffle Sandwich, Kimchi Pork Belly Hash, XO Poached Eggs, Cheddar Scallion Biscuits, Morning Udon.

I would most certainly recommend trying the brunch at Heritage by Madison.
