Rambu has been THE opening of the season. It’s fam Rambu has been THE opening of the season. It’s familiar, nostalgic, and playful, done with care and confidence. And honestly, as a Malaysian, it makes me feel so proud to see the flavors of home done like this.

Kudos to chef @junnishiyama and team!

The veritable signature is the Rendang Donut, a labor of love. Slow-cooked oxtail with deep spices (and chocolate) is compacted into an utterly rich bite.

The Ayam Penyetttt!!! lives up to its exclamation points. The Indonesian-inspired “smashed chicken” is shattering crisp, paired with turmeric aioli and pineapple sambal. Do not miss this.

Next, Nasi Ulam, a rice salad combines fresh herbs, sambal, crunchy shallots and chicken skin. A flavor-bomb that’s pulls at nostalgia.

Rambu even features far-flung ingredients like buah keluak, an earthy-bitter complex flavored nut native to Malaysia. That’s paired with spiced butter and fat creamy mussels on flatbread.

Channeling street food energy is the grilled mutton skewers, wrapped in betel leaf. Meanwhile grilled ox tongue is soaked in an addictive sourdough dashi broth, dusted with toasted rice powder.

Finally, an elevated kaya toast! Homemade kaya, ice cold butter, but with salted egg yolk and a mad genius egg-and-soy cream. Don’t miss the Thai creme caramel. Full Thai tea flavors with this one, paired beautifully with pecans and grilled watermelon & calamansi reduction.

A throwback to my early days in Shanghai. Bifengta A throwback to my early days in Shanghai. Bifengtang — the HK-style Cantonese restaurant that’s been slingin’ crispy garlic madness since 1998.

Revisiting after nearly a decade, somethings have changed (mostly the interiors) but others (like the classics) remain the same: garlicky, tasty, and affordable.

I never thought I’d see caviar on a buffet, but he I never thought I’d see caviar on a buffet, but here it is, tins of them, completely unattended! That’s YICAFE’s Friday night seafood buffet for you. Absolute, glorious madness.

Beyond the caviar free-for-all, there’s lobster, king crab, fresh-carved tuna sashimi, crayfish, hairy crab…you get the idea. But also steak, short rib, and food from 10 other live cooking stations.

It’s normally ¥598, but I’ve arranged a lil something: 20% off, so ¥478.40. (until Jan 30) Woop woop!

Details are on rachelgouk.com

It’s been a couple years since I’ve eaten at Le Co It’s been a couple years since I’ve eaten at Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire Shanghai (Michelin one star)… But when the legendary chef is in town, you show up. Lunch was a showing of classic French fine dining, executed by Executive Chef Ramses Navarro.

The highlight was undoubtedly the sole meunière, a flawless fillet medallion paired with a sauce of depth, its richness extracted from rockfish. Another was the Uruguayan beef fillet, paired with a glossy tataki sauce.
