White Foods

Located in Shanghai’s former French concession is White Foods (白膳鸣), a modern Chinese restaurant that serves affordable, well-executed claypot rice sets and matcha desserts in a calm, minimalist space. Upstairs, tatami seating and a zen-beige palette give it a distinctly Japanese vibe (despite it’s self-designated Chinese branding), while neatly arranged rice sets echo teishoku trays. Highlights include Black Cod Rice and Wagyu Beef Rice sets, served with mushrooms, seasonal vegetables, and subtle sauces. Don’t miss their matcha desserts like Cream Sablé, Basque Cake, and Red Bean Mochi. They also have hand-whisked matcha drinks, from traditional to modern ones with alcohol. A spot that’s both tasteful and unexpectedly good value.
