Xiao Yang Zhou Scallion Pancakes (小扬州特色葱油饼)
Xiao Yang Zhou (小扬州特色葱油饼) is one of the last standing street food carts in Shanghai, at least in the city center. This scallion pancake street cart is operated by a husband and wife who purportedly have been doing this since 1967. So make that the last and oldest standing street cart. Scallion pancakes are traditionally made with pork fat and margarine and bits of fatty pork and fistfuls of chives. The pancakes are folded street-side and baked in a shallow kiln that’s built into the cart.
It’s a five minute walk from the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, so after (or before) you can grab a coffee to wash down this tasty treat. FYI, if they sell out for the day, they might pack up early. As of 2025, one cong you bing is ¥7.
