San Lin Tang (三林塘)

San Lin Tang has been dishing up Shanghai “jiaotou” noodles and dumplings for more than 40 years.

It was previously located in a ramshackle lot in Huangpu district, a memorable space with unforgettable character. Unfortunately, due to the times, they’ve had to relocate. It’s still run by all the original staff. While its new home doesn’t have the same authentic “old Shanghai” feel as its previous location, it does have a proper kitchen, air-conditioning, and plenty more seats.

San Lin Tang is famous for two things: braised intestine noodles and pork dumplings. The style of noodles is jiaotou mian (浇头面), which means “topping” or “topped” noodles. Popular noodle toppings include minced pork, braised intestines, kaofu (tofu), and soy braised mushrooms.
