Terroir Strong (壮壮) is a contemporary Chinese restaurant in Xintiandi’s Central Plaza mall, focusing squarely on flavors of Northwestern cuisine. The modern, multi-faceted space is a draw in itself, boasting a marble-top counter for open-kitchen viewing, a private dining room, and a spacious terrace. The menu, helmed by the son of the founder of the highly successful Xibei chain, is a thoughtful modernization of regional classics. It is a celebration of lamb and goat, presented in all their rustic glory — skewered, boiled, stewed, served over salad, or baked into pies and dumplings. This is complemented by flatbreads, hand-pulled noodles, and traditional dried milk skin. The culinary dialogue between tradition and innovation extends to more inventive interpretations, including modern salad bowls, all while rigorously highlighting prime ingredients sourced directly from the Northwest.
