About Odelice Shanghai
Odelice is a casual French café and restaurant located at the popular nexus of Xinle Lu and Fumin Lu in Shanghai. You must have passed by at least once, if not, have already frequented this quaint terraced restaurant.
The brand has been around since 2012, and has since expanded with multiple locations in Hong Kong. The Xinle Lu venue has been around since 2013! It’s French restaurant that, in their own words, “does not have to be occasional, formal, or pricey,” but rather an everyday eatery. In short, it’s affordably priced and easy-going.
It’s a cozy bistro with a cheerful vibe. It’s seemingly less rowdy than its neighbors on Fumin Lu, suitable for those seeking a more chill destination for brunch. A big draw is the terrace. It’s a comfortably sized space sheltered with an awning and shielded by tall ferns for some privacy. It’s also dog-friendly.
All Day Brunch, Galettes & Crepes
The signatures at Odelice are the crepes and galettes, of which there are plenty of in variation and toppings. And while the menu is French in DNA, they do have a few dishes with an Asian twist. For example, bullfrog legs are coated in an addictive Sichuan peppercorn spice rub and mussels are topped with pickled vegetables from Zhejiang.
There are brunch sets, whereby certain mains are paired with a drink for a nominal fee, for example, add ¥10 for an americano or iced lemon tea. There are plenty more dishes on the menu, which are available all-day.
Brunch dishes start from ¥78, mostly fully-loaded galettes, made gluten-free with buckwheat flour.
English Breakfast Galette (¥88) – The usual suspects of a full breakfast plate wrapped in a galatte. Ham, bacon, eggs, mozzarella cheese, tomato, and mushrooms.
Egg, Emmental, Spinach, Creamy Mushrooms (¥78) – A classic combination of sautéed spinach and mushrooms with creamy emmental cheese and a sunny side up egg.
Stewed Beef Cheek Sandwich (¥108) – A hella juicy sandwich of sauce-drenched slow-cooked beef cheek stacked with mozzarella, pickles, tomato, chipotle sauce, and avocado, served with fries.
Shashuka (¥88) – A lesser-seen variation on the shashuka with the addition of avocado that is peppery and slightly smoky in flavor. Tomatoes, avocado, bell peppers, mushrooms, soft-boiled egg, garlic bread.
Spicy Seafood Spaghetti (¥118) – Mildly spiced with a sauce of Sriracha, tomato, lime, and cream, laden with white clams, shrimp, and cuttlefish. A hefty portion of pasta that’s also available for dinner.
Duck Confit (¥108) – A classic duck confit served with a rum cinnamon pineapple sauce and rocket salad.
Mussels (¥158) – The addition of Zhejiang pickles is a welcome twist, giving the mussels a salty-sour pickly tang. Served with garlic toast.
Braised Chicken (¥158) – Butter pan-fried mushrooms and green peas with shallot cream sauce. A comforting dish of whole spring chicken stewed in a buttery, creamy sauce. This one begs for mashed potatoes and bread.
Bullfrog Legs (¥98) – Fried bullfrog coated in an addictive spice mix with Sichuan peppercorn, served with onion purée and sauerkraut.
For dessert, crepes are the obvious choice, but I implore you to try the Lemon Curd Cake. This dense and moist curd cake reminds me of the dim sum dessert Ma Lai Gao, as it has a beehive-like structure. It even pulls apart like it! It’s not too sweet, and most of its sweetness comes from the ice cream.
Lemon Curd Cake (¥55) with ice cream.
Nutella (¥40) – Perhaps the most classic of crepes, slathered with a generous spread of thick Nutella and dusted with icing sugar. One for the childhood memories.
Sea Salt Caramel (¥58) with chocolate sauce, almonds, and vanilla ice cream. I feel like the salted caramel could be punchier, but still enjoyable.
For drinks, Odelice prides themselves on offering fresh fruit smoothies, starting from ¥38. Coffees and teas aplenty. On the booze front, there are options of wines by the bottle starting from ¥188, cocktails from ¥68, and beer from ¥45.
