Ichi Roll is a casual Japanese restaurant serving up hand roll sushi in Shanghai, brought to you by the Sake-X Group (Tomodachi, Sake-Ichi, Fuxing Bakery, Sake-Ichi Oden).
It’s a straight-forward concept and space. The room is a single large bar counter that acts as a prep area for the made-to-order sushi rolls.

The menu is simple.
There are a couple of sets, from three (¥78) to six rolls (¥188) with dessert. Or you can go for single rolls, which range from cucumber (¥12) to scallop (¥28) to something called “The King of Roll” for ¥198, which presumably comes laden with a wide assortment of seafood.
There are a few simple appetizers and sashimi, too.
For drinks, beer on tap starts from ¥35, cocktails from ¥68.
It’s inexpensive (cheaper if you get the sets rather than single rolls) and enjoyable. The quality of the seafood is pretty good and everything I had tasted fresh. I preferred the seafood rolls versus the meat/foie ones. The rice portion is a little more than I’d like, but serves well to fill you up. Five rolls is just right, six is my limit.
What is desirable about a sushi bar like this is, well, that there are so few available downtown. Casual, no-frills, and affordable.
