Crush is a New York-style wine bistro in Jing’an, located across from Shankang Li. It’s an unpretentious wine bar with a modern American menu. Plus, they have a great brunch free-flow deal.

About Crush

Crush is a modern American wine bistro in Jing'an, Shanghai that also does a free-flow brunch.

Crush opened in September 2021. It’s the brainchild of New York-native Elliott Shay, founder of wine import company Vault Asia. This isn’t Elliott’s first rodeo—he’s had his hand in a couple F&B projects before. Having been through the wringer, his principal objective for Crush is to have quality, house-made craft food done well. For the menu, he’s employed the expertise of chef Dylan Briley, previously of Goga and MMB, and who’s also consulted at a handful of other Shanghai restaurants.

The space is classy yet casual. There’s a large centerpiece bar with booth seating on either side, plus high tables, seating just over 50 people. It’s bright and airy during the day, warm and inviting in the evenings.

As for the wine list, there are about 200 different labels; bottles will rotate, balancing value for money vs variety. Wine being Elliot’s area of expertise, he’s (almost) always at Crush to provide recommendations. Wines by the glass start from ¥60, bottles from ¥230. Crush also has some wine flights, four 50ml pours of red or white for ¥160/¥170. There are also some house cocktails for ¥80.

The Food

The food is modern American, along with a couple dishes that have Asian accents. And everything that can be made in-house is made in-house—the breads, the deliciously crispy bacon, and hand-cut fries. It’s a short and sweet menu compared to other restaurants, but the dishes are hits all around, and the portions, especially for the mains, are hearty and generous.

Here’s what to expect for dinner:

House-Cured Bacon-Wrapped Medjool Dates (¥70) – Large Moroccan dates painstakingly stuffed with ground Marcona almonds and gorgonzola dolce, wrapped with house bacon. Sweet, creamy, salty, and extremely rich. A luxurious bar snack / a powerful appetizer.

Yakitori Pork Belly (¥118) – Slices of pork belly with maple bourbon glaze and a side of chunky tuna aioli with fresh sourdough. Best way to enjoy this is to stack them into little toasties. Again, a very rich dish.

Tuna Tataki (¥188) with miso mustard sauce, furikake, pickled ginger, and baby cilantro.

The Crusher (¥128) – Lord knows I love a good burger, and this one is pretty damn good. It has a 170g patty of house ground M3 wagyu, crispy house-cured bacon, smoked provolone, and house buns. Served with a mountain of hand-cut fries or pickled vegetables.

Braised Beef Cheek Bordelaise (¥238) served on “rosemary spoon bread” aka buttery polenta with brown butter glazed shallots, chunky carrots, and charred leeks. I would definitely order this again.

Chocolate Cake (¥70) – An ultra-rich slice of dark chocolate cake. This was fantastic…and I don’t even go for desserts! It’s also gluten-free.

Crush also has the staples of steaks, and platters of cheese and charcuterie. And they have a wine pairing menu for two that rotates on a regular basis.

Traditional English Roast (add ¥200) – If you want to ball out on brunch, this is definitely worth it. It’s thin slices of roasted Snake River M9 rump steak with excellent roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, tomatoes on the vine, and gravy. (You should 100% ask for extra gravy.)
