New Dishes Lawry’s The Prime Rib Shanghai
Lawry’s Shanghai opened earlier this year to much fanfare as prime rib enthusiasts flocked to satiate their craving at the steakhouse.
I wrote about it here, a tell-all about their signature standing rib roast and its accoutrements.
In addition to their signature prime rib, Lawry’s has fattened up their menu with some heavy-hitting non-steak mains as well as new appetizers for both weekend brunch/lunch and dinner, thus expanding their repertoire.
I love prime rib and that’s enough for me, but as the Shanghai trend goes, variety is paramount.
If there was one entrée that truly impressed, it was most certainly the Pork Chop.
Lawry’s certainly lives up to its excess with this dish. The jumbo double-rib pork chop is sous vide to ensure a juicy center, then basted in butter to lock in the flavors.
It’s possibly the best pork chop I’ve ever had. It’s super juicy and tender, probably from the cooking method and its thick cut. It is well paired with caramelized apples, grain mustard cream sauce, and arugula.
Other mains for dinner see a USDA Bone-In Ribeye weighing in at 610 grams, served with garlic confit and roasted tomatoes, in case prime rib isn’t your thing.
The Halibut is also a standout, topped with a generous amount of king crab meat and baked over with cheese, served with mushrooms in a bright and briny fish broth flavored with shallots, fennel, and plenty of olives.
New appetizers include a two-bite Caviar Steak Tartare Crisp, seasoned steak tartare sandwiched between crispy hashbrowns, topped with quail egg and caviar. A Salmon Avocado medley presents a lighter summertime dish of house-cured beetroot salmon, salmon roe, lemon balsamic pearls, and balsamic vinegar reduction.
One of my favorite share-friendly bites is the Calamari. Tender chunks of calamari are breaded and deep-fried, served with a house-made mayonnaise. It’s a simple and enjoyable dish done well.
They also have a seasonal soup, and surprise, surprise — it’s beef! The consommé is made with the same USDA beef and bone trimmings for the prime rib. It’s a clear and flavorful broth, poured tableside over a beef roll with asparagus.
Signature Lawry’s Sides
Be sure to pair all of that with some of their signature sides. Lawry’s has a new and improved Mac & Cheese, made with a new secret combination of cheeses. Or try the Fried Zucchini, deep-fried zucchini fingers served with house-made ranch dressing.
Don’t skip the Meatballs either!
These fluffy all-beef meatballs served in marinara sauce have a backstory too. These used to be a freebie for waiting guests during the early days of the OG Beverly Hills Lawry’s. People liked it so much that the meatballs made it onto the menu, and it has been a staple since.
Weekend Brunch & Lunch at Lawry’s Shanghai
Dinner tends to come across as a more formal affair.
Lunch and weekend brunch, however, is very much laidback, and both involve a stellar deal that comes with an all-you-can-eat salad bar.
Lunch is ¥268 for one main course plus a salad bar, which features more than just greens, and is also laden with carpaccio, mussels, and desserts.
Weekend Brunch is ¥398 for one main course plus a seafood-heavy salad bar with more premium offerings. Both packages also include one selected drink.
For those seeking a boozy brunch can add on four hours of free-flow for ¥188! Free-flow runs from 11am to 3pm and includes house wine, house sparkling, and Asahi draft.
New lunchtime mains include a Yorkshire Pudding Bowl, a double-sized Yorkshire pudding loaded with grilled chicken prosciutto, onion and mushroom ragu, spinach, roasted tomatoes, and a sunny side up egg.
The lobster roll has been upgraded to the Lobster Supreme (add ¥88). It’s a three-part seafood dish of lobster roll, lobster bisque, and garlic butter shrimp.
To further emphasize their beefy offerings for brunch, there’s the Beef Rib.
It’s a whole beef short rib cooked to a tender finish and glazed with their house barbecue sauce, served with Lawry’s hand-cut potato chips and pickles. It’s a rich cut doused in a tangy sauce.
