Chef Conrad Van Den Heever branches out to open La Brise 523, his first independent restaurant located within Shanghai’s tourist destination Sinan Mansions.

La Brise 523, a restaurant in SInan Mansions, Shanghai.

La Brise 523 is located within in Sinan Mansions, just opposite Fuxing Park. The restaurant has a modest space with about 40 seats. The main dining area looks out onto the square, flanked by a window that peers into kitchen, and there’s a large communal table for 10 on the other side next to the bar.

The restaurant also claims a cozy wrap-around outdoor seating area with tables facing the dining room and large bar tables at the entrace. The venue is dog-friendly, too.

This is South African chef Conrad Van Den Heever’s first independent restaurant. On the menu are some of his greatest hits, ones that you might find familiar if you had eaten any of the restaurants he previously worked at.

Many of the dishes are flame-grilled and smoked, finished over the coals in the firepit oven.

It’s mostly Western with Southeast Asian accents, an influence that stems from chef Conrad’s exposure to Cape Malay cuisine, a niche unique to the Western Cape of South Africa.

Grilled Honey Tomato Salad (¥68) – Aged & confit yellow cherry tomatoes, stracciatella, balsamic jelly, Thai basil vinaigrette, garnished with crispy Kataifi. Fleshy, full-flavored tomatoes.

Root Vegetables & Cashew Hummus (¥78) – Cashew nuts blended into a smooth and thick hummus-like consistency, served with tender grilled celeriac, pickled golden beets, and roasted carrots. Vegetables that taste meaty. Hearty, good to spread with bread.

Cucumber Kombucha & Scallop Ceviche (¥98) with salmon roe and ajo blanco (almond millk) and compressed apple, topped with apple-cucumber kombucha granita. Scallops pickled in whey for added creaminess.

Australian Black Angus Beef Carpaccio (¥128) with smoked egg yolk, chickpea mayo, and pickled onions. Great balance. A lovely starter.

Fire Pit Roasted Iberian Pork Ribs (¥228) – LB523 BBQ sauce, house pickles and served with thick-cut fries, black garlic aioli, and ketchup. Bone-tender with a tangy sauce. An ample portion that’s great for sharing.

Grilled King Tiger Prawns (¥98) with sambal olek mayo and avocado mousse. Juicy prawns cooked over the charcoal grill with an umami rich sambal mayo topped with savory fish flakes.

Sea Urchin Tagliatelle (¥188) – A massive medallion of roasted scallop over housemade tagliattle tossed in sea urchin sauce and topped with Thai basil foam. Another highlight and must-order.

Brunch Highlights

The brunch menu satisfies all the staples required of Shanghai’s favorite weekend ritual.

Soft Shell Crab Benedict (¥88) – Lightly battered and fried soft shell crab dusted with red miso salt, served with char-grilled asparagus, poached egg, hollandaise, and watercress salad.

There are multiple eggs Benedicts to choose from, including smoked salmon gravlax, homemade ham, and a vegetarian portobello. There are half a dozen sandwiches, including a burger that I’ll be returning for soon, as well as heartier plates of steaks and a carbonara. Brunch dishes start at ¥58, all a la carte.

Reuben Sandwich (¥78) – 48-hour braised M7 wagyu chuck beef served on toasted sourdough with wholegrain mustard, sauerkraut, emmental cheese, and pickles. Comes with thick-cut fries.

Coconut Granola & Berry Compote (¥68) served with mango sorbet, strawberry yogurt, and mixed fruit.

Brunch-time free-flow is ¥188 for two hours of selected red and white wine, prosecco, Aperol Spritz, and highballs.

To Drink

For drinks, there’s plenty of wine, including quite a few South African wineries like Rascallion, pictured below. Wines by the glass start from ¥68, bottles from ¥308. La Brise also has classic and signature cocktails from ¥68 to ¥88.
