About Mosto

Mosto is one of Beijing’s cornerstone restaurants. It first opened in Sanlitun’s Nali Patio in 2008 and has been a popular destination for food and drink ever since. It’s part of the same restaurant group that’s also responsible for La Social (recently closed) and Moka Bros, led by founders husband and wife Eva Biörck and Alex Molina, and chef-partner Daniel Urdaneta.

Hailed as an upbeat, classy yet casual venue that’s bolstered by a reverence for hospitality and service, Mosto intends to bring the same vibe to Shanghai.

Located on the fifth floor on Shaanxi Nan Lu, the space is smart and elegant, but still casual and welcoming. Understated warm interiors for the evenings with city and sunset views, and a bright and vibrant atmosphere for brunch.

There’s also a small terrace with al fresco seating and a cozy private room in the wine room with a view of the kitchen.

Mosto’s food has been called Mediterranean, European, and South American, but in their own words, their menu is “a blend of favorites and influences that stem from our three different backgrounds.”

Without further ado, here’s what to order:

Yellowtail Tuna Ceviche (¥108) – Cubed yellowtail tuna quick cured in a zesty, spicy lime juice base lightened with coconut milk, with peppers, shallots, cilantro, and crispy potatoes. Coconut milk isn’t traditional, but it’s tasty and up there with one of my favorite ceviches.

Seared Hokkaido Scallops (¥148) – Hokkaido scallops served with an earthy shiitake mushroom duxelle, sweet onion compote, and grassy and aromatic mojo sauce.

Seared Rougie Foie Gras (¥198) with saffron risotto, plum-balsamic coulis, and parmesan crisps. Perfumed with saffron, perfectly seasoned, topped with rich, custardy foie. It’s a must-order.

Spinach & Kale Lasagna (¥98) – Perfect layers of creamy spinach and kale with parmesan sauce, béchamel, and tomato sauce. It’s divine, and a dish you’d be less willing to share because it’s so good. It’s also a fantastic vegetarian option and great value.

Roasted Monkfish (¥228) – You don’t see much monkfish on menus and it’s honestly an underrated fish. Monkfish is known for its sweet, dense, lean flesh, which makes it tricky to cook because it can easily dry out. Roasted and basted with butter, served atop green pea purée with spicy sautéed green mussels, crispy potatoes, and saffron sauce. It’s a treat.

Slow-Braised Beef Cheek (¥248) – Beef cheek slow braised with a pineapple-smoked red wine sauce, served with carrot purée and roasted spicy cauliflower.

Also on the dinner menu are other dishes to share like charcuterie (¥288) and steaks, including a tenderloin (¥248) and a rib-eye M5 (¥428).
