Heritage by Madison is a modern American restaurant in Shanghai. They have a new brunch and it’s right up my alley.

If you’ve been reading my articles for a while now, you can tell I’m a creature of habit—Heritage is one of my favorite restaurants in town, and for good reason. It’s consistent, for both food and service. Plus, the restaurant is dog-friendly, inside or on the terrace!

The Food: Brunch at Heritage by Madison

The brunch menu has plenty of options, available a la carte or as a set of three dishes for ¥188. I suggest the latter, whereby you chose one dish per category: yolk, meats, cold, sweet, or vegetables.

I ate through nearly the whole brunch menu. Here is what’s on offer and what you should order.

Deviled Tea Eggs (¥88) – Eggs with horseradish salmon, Hokkaido sea urchin with crispy salmon skin and soy.A little appetizer to start.

Black Rice Salad (¥68) – Herbs, cauliflower, yoghurt and house chili oil. Lovely texture. I want to bottle that chili oil.

Poached Egg (¥78) – Poached egg with pork belly hash and XO hollandaise sauce over brioche. I’d order this twice in the same meal if I could. 10/10.

Short Rib Sandwich (¥98) – Garlic-chili jelly, sunny side up egg, arugula. An excellent brunch sandwich. Nothing crazy going on—just really tender short rib and a mildly spicy garlic-chili jelly.

Chicken HK Waffles (¥98) – Fried chicken over cornbread egg waffles topped with Laoganma honey butter. Also another must-order. Cornbread egg waffles are a great idea—crispiness maximized. The Laoganma honey butter is more sweet than it is spicy and is excellent.
