About Bottega Shanghai

Bottega’s self-proclaimed title of being the “most awarded pizza in China” rings true. Since opening in Beijing in 2014, Bottega has won numerous international and local awards for their authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas.

Their latest accolade comes from world premier pizza guide 50 Top Pizza, which ranked Bottega 9th Best Pizzeria in Asia Pacific. Topping that is the award from Italian culinary authority Gambero Rosso, which bestowed Bottega with “Pizzeria of the Year 2024” worldwide, as well as the coveted Three Slice rating, of which only 15 pizzerias across the globe hold the honor.

Bottega churn out high-quality Neapolitan style pizzas by the hundreds daily. Forming these authentic pizzas is Paolo Salvo, a fourth-generation pizzaiolo (pizza maker) from Naples, and one of the four key partners in the Bottega empire.

Paolo Salvo

The Salvo family have been running pizzerias in and around Naples for nearly a century. Insanely hydrated doughs are proofed to a fluffy and aerated finish, topped with high-quality imported ingredients, and fired in Bottega’s Napoli-sourced pizza ovens at 450 degrees Celsius.

Bottega Jing’an

Bottega opened their first Shanghai location in 2023 on Xiangyang Bei Lu at the KWAH building, and now has a second location in Jing’an.

There are two entrance points to Bottega’s Jing’an location — through the park on Beijing Xi Lu or the main gate at 457 Shaanxi Bei Lu. It’s part of a newly minted complex of cafes, boutiques, and offices.

The grounds are dog-friendly, and Bottega is also pet-friendly indoors.

The pizzeria boasts the same iconic aesthetic of its sister locations, a stylish and modern interior outfitted with disco balls, striking wall art, and beautiful original photography inspired by vintage Italian advertisements.

There’s a glittering long bar, grab-and-go wine fridges, and a DJ booth.

In addition to the 80-plus seats inside, Bottega Jing’an has outdoor seating for 40-plus.

New Pizzas & Dishes

With a new location comes new dishes. Fans of Bottega staples fret-not — beloved favorites and classics like parmigiana, four cheese, and Bottega pizzas remain on the menu.

There are 21 pizzas and five calzones to choose from, of which six are new entries.

Of the new pizzas, the Mediterranea stood out as a favorite. It is made with a tomato base, topped with grilled octopus, garlic, parsley, oregano, and fresh basil, served with lemon to squeeze. It’s extremely flavorful. Though, it can be a bit “wet” from the lemon juice, but it doesn’t taste the same without it.

Mediterranea (¥159)

Another winner is the Salsiccia e Pepperoni, topped with sausage, sautéed peppers, fior di latte mozzarella, parsley, basil, and parmigiano Reggiano.

Salsiccia e Pepperoni (¥129)

Don’t underestimate the Datterina! It might seem simple — only topped with tomatoes — but it’s holds its own. The cherry tomatoes are sourced from pizzaiolo Paolo Salvo’s hometown and are grown near Mount Vesuvius, and are considerably sweeter and more plump than your typical variety. Accompanying these sweet tomatoes is a base of fior di latte mozzarella, parmigiano Reggiano, and fresh basil.

Datterina (¥99)

There’s even a new pizza with French fries. If you’re a carb-on-carb person, you’ll get a kick out of the Americana, made with fries, crispy guanciale, fior di latte mozzarella, and fresh basil.

Americana (¥109)

Ultimately, the calzone reigned supreme for me. The new Calzone Alla Mortadella knocked it out of the park. So much cheese! But also, the edges were fluffy and airy, yet with a crunch and desirable chewiness.

Calzone Alla Mortadella (¥119)

It’s fully loaded with fior di latte mozzarella, mortadella, parmigiano Reggiano, fresh basil, black pepper, and pistachio.

Other new dishes range from appetizers to pastas and grilled seafood. Of the starters, there’s the Crocchè Di Patate, croquettes filled with potato, mozzarella cheese, bechamel, salami, and guanciale. These massive blocks of molten cheesy goodness are too good to miss.

Seafood dishes take a more prominent stance on the menu. This includes a seafood salad featuring poached octopus, calamari, Argentinian shrimp, cuttlefish, and clams, a light cold dish of flavorful seafood as a starter. Or the hot version of mussels and clams cooked in a light soup with garlic, chili, fresh basil, and olive oil.

Insalata Di Mare (¥168)
Soutè Di Vongole (¥129)

Bottega also does pastas. The Gnocchi takes inspiration from the Salssicia e Friarielli pizzas, and combines the flavor from the salt-brined Italian leafy greens with sausage, clams, and pesto. It’s a potent combo! It’s a rich tasting dish that is also garlicky and has a mild undertone of chili.

Gnocchi Salsiccia e Friarielli (¥119)

The Spaghetti Alle Vongole is wholly traditional and delicious. Spaghetti is tossed in a garlic and chili sauce with mixed clams, olive oil, and fresh basil.

Wines by the bottle from ¥288! Cocktails by Bottega mixologist Peter Kwok aplenty, too! Both traditional Italian aperitivo and house signature cocktails available, starting from ¥70.
