After some research and price comparisons, I’ve picked a few standout set menus that offer excellent value at solid restaurants. Here are my recommendations — take note!

AZUL (Shankang Li)

About The Restaurant: Latin restaurant by chef patron Eduardo Vargas. Easy-going Latin food with a twist, delivering comfort and satisfaction. Spacious outdoor terrace and dog-friendly. 

The Summary: AZUL, ever generous. The lunch menu goes beyond your typical lunch set deal. For just ¥78 per person, you get two starters, a main, and dessert, plus a drink. Dinner is an even better deal; ¥118 (min 2 people), which includes plenty of starters, tapas, and mains to share. Be sure to book ahead, I’m sure this one will sell out soon. 

Azul restaurant Shanghai for Restaurant Week

Lunch — ¥78 per person
• 1 Drink: Soft drink, lemonade, coffee, OR tea
• 2 starters: Black sourdough bread with roasted tomato-olive compote AND chicken corn chowder
• 1 Main: Arroz con mariscos OR Latin halibut OR Jamaican jerk chicken OR callos pasta OR Latin-style steak (+¥40)
• Brazilian panna cotta

Dinner — ¥118 per person (min. 2 people)
• 2 Drinks: Spanish beer, sangria, OR lemonade

Colca

About The Restaurant: Peruvian restaurant by Eduardo Vargas under the AZUL Group umbrella. One of few places in Shanghai that does Peruvian fare. It’s easy-going, delicious stuff. 

The Summary: Just like AZUL, the menus here are generous! Made for sharing. Venue is also pet-friendly.

Lunch — ¥148 per person
• 1 Drink: Soft drink, lemonade, coffee, OR tea
• 4 Starters: Grilled bread with onion butter, yellow chili chicken croquetas, lettuce bite with tataki beef tenderloin, tuna avocado causa
• 1 Main: Roast chicken brasa OR seabass chicharron OR black angus striploin with fried noodles OR prawns with beans
• 1 Dessert: Peruvian flan (recommended) OR lemon pie OR citrus mousse


Dinner — ¥258 per person (min. 2 people)
• 1 Drink: Pisco sour OR chilcano OR sangria OR maracuya cooler
• 6 Starters: Grilled bread with onion butter, cucumber-avocado gazpacho, Nikkei prawn, yellow chili chicken croquetas, ceviche nippon, California causa with dungeness crab

Pirata

About The Restaurant: A Spanish restaurant and tapas bar by Chef Ling Huang, and a fan favorite for those seeking unadulterated Spanish food in Shanghai.Space is rustic and homey.

The Summary: The food at Pirata is always solid — I have a great experience every time I’m there. The menu here features some of their signatures like the foie gras toast, wagyu tartare, and the Basque cheesecake.

Dinner — ¥258 per person
• 3 Snacks
• 2 Montaditos: Iberico ham OR kingfish tostada OR foie gras toast OR mushroom and anchovy, OR escalivada with tuna belly
• 2 Tapas: Salmon crudo OR wagyu steak tartare OR shrimp in garlic chili oil OR fried chicken brava OR seasonal mushrooms OR sashimi tuna tartare (+¥68)
• 1 Main: Marisco Arroz Meloso OR spaghetti with baby scallops and XO sauce OR wagyu bavette (125g)

Champloo

About The Restaurant: A Japanese grill restaurant that does omakase-style menus. Intimate counter seating. A mix of grilled meats and seafood, supplemented by sashimi, sushi, and seasonal dishes on the set. 

In Summary: I’ve never heard of Champloo before but the set menu looks pretty enticing that I might just go during Restaurant Week. 

Lunch & Dinner — ¥498 per person
• Appetizers & Grilled Dishes: Snow crab legs, horse mackerel with black truffle, grilled thread fin, grilled pigeon leg, wagyu beef, grilled crab claw, crab meat spring roll
• Nigiri sushi: 8 pieces
• Main: Yellow croaker noodle soup
• Dessert: fruit sorbet
• Drinks: 3 pours of sake or 1 soft drink
• PLUS: yakitori and vegetables can be refilled for free
• Complimentary The Chuan Pure Malt Whisky tasting pour


Salt-Less

Salt-Less is a vegetarian restaurant in Shanghai serving up creative plant-based dishes.

About The Restaurant: A creative vegetarian restaurant that doesn’t hold back on flavor, featuring a mix of western, Chinese, and fusion plant-based dishes. Housed in a cozy remodeled lane house.

In Summary: Most of the dishes on the set menu are what I loved when I visited, including the eel, chicken steak burger, and black truffle rice. Big flavors!

Salt-Less is a vegetarian restaurant in Shanghai serving up creative plant-based dishes.

Lunch & Dinner — ¥178 per person
• 1 Soup: Mushroom consommé OR corn soup OR Pumpkin Soup with Lion’s Mane (+¥8, recommended)
• 1 Cold Starter: Seasonal vegetable salad, beetroot tartare OR yellow “salmon” (+¥8)
• 1 Hot Starter: “Eel” made with mushrooms (recommended) OR green curry tofu OR roasted vegetables
• 1 Main: Lasagna OR black truffle cheese corn sandwich OR chicken steak burger (recommended) OR black truffle fried rice OR crab roe noodles

TING

Ting, pastry-inspired fine dining restaurant in Xintiandi

About The Restaurant: A creative fine dining restaurant by Frédéric Jaros in Xintiandi that draws inspiration from pastry techniques, Italian cuisine, and global influences. An intimate dining experience at a chef’s counter around the open kitchen.

In Summary: Featuring the current seasonal set menu, “Beach Holiday.” It’s solid deal on the menu, though a couple dishes removed. The menu is usually ¥1,588 plus 10% service charge. Good for celebrating an occasion. 

Dinner — ¥1,188 + 10% per person
• Amuse bouche: Smoked salmon puff, cod fish mousse, clams
• Cuttlefish, shrimp, octopus salad, TING garden sorbet, vegan almond mayo
• Pigeon, smoked potato foam, marinated egg yolk
• Mussel ravioli, stracciatella
• Duck consomme, morel, Iberian ham
• Picaña M9 wagyu, red peppers, black bean sauce
• Peach sorbet

The Pine

About The Restaurant: An elegant fine dining restaurant that serves Chinese-style French cuisine, housed in a garden villa on Changle Lu.

The Summary: Combining the best of both worlds, Chinese and French, in a creative set menu. Good for exploration!

Lunch — ¥618 per person + 10%
• Brioche
• Daikon, sesame, shiitake
• Abalone soup, eggplant
• M7 wagyu, celeriac, beef jus
• Ham, capellini

Sushi Ryu

About The Restaurant: A sleek Japanese omakase restaurant in Hongkou district. (New on my radar.)

In Summary: The dinner omakase menu looks solid!

Dinner — ¥899 + 10% per person
• Appetizers: Snow crab, white fish, shellfish, sea urchin, steamed sea bream, seasonal tempura
• Sushi: 9 pieces
• Miso soup
• Fresh fruit & matcha coconut panna cotta


Ember

About The Restaurant: Ember is a high-end Japanese restaurant in the Jing An Kerry Center that specializes in “niku kappo omakase,” a set menu where beef is the star of the meal. Think highly marbled cuts quick-seared over the charcoal grill. 

New restaurant and bar openings in Shanghai. @ Nomfluence

In Summary: Usually the set starts at ¥880 for private room dining. So the ¥588, while slightly different than the usual menu, is still a great deal for the experience. 

 Lunch & Dinner — ¥588 per person
• Chilled corn consomme
• Tuna & beef tartare hand roll
• Salt-grilled beef tongue
• Charcoal-grilled chicken thigh
• Eel with cucumber
• Beef blade steak with eggplant

Those are just a handful of highlights from the huge list of restaurants for Restaurant Week. 

Other restaurants that also stand out include:

  • Camino bar&bistro
    • New on my radar. Spanish restaurant in Changning. Their dinner set (¥178 per person, min 2 pax) is a pretty hefty one.
  • Cheng Long Hang
    • If you’re craving hairy crab feasts, this is the place to go. Sets for lunch (¥199) and dinner (¥299) feature crab-everything dishes like mapo crab tofu, crab roe soup dumplings, and more. 
  • Chez Jojo
    • Both locations are running the same four-course menus for brunch and dinner (both ¥258). 
  • Jean Georges
    • The three-course lunch is ¥298 and includes a drink.
  • Jiangnan Talk
    • Recommend the dinner set (¥258 per person, min 2 pax), which includes starting snacks, five appetizers, double-boiled fish maw soup, four mains, braised rice with abalone, and dessert. 
  • Maison Lameloise 
    • Michelin one-star French restaurant in the clouds (68th floor) has a pretty good lunch set for ¥788 + 15% service charge.
  • Mr & Mrs Bund
    • Sets for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Recommend the brunch (¥368), which includes starters, prime rib main from the carving trolley and sides, and dessert (go for the Real French Toast).
  • Social @ The St. Regis Shanghai Jing’an
    • Buffet brunch and dinner for ¥118! 
  • Tomatito
    • The dinner set is the one to go for – ¥178 per person, which includes a bunch of tapas, starters plus a seafood paella and dessert.
